The similarities in the forward-step figure postures, the serpentine lamp stems, the base structures, the apparent lost bearing of a flag or a torch – all seem to indicate a common style and a common source as the creator. The figure appears to be an athlete, donning a tight t-shirt and loose-fitting boxer-style shorts that many may recall from televised and archived films of the 1930’s Olympic games. The left arm is held high and the hand is obviously shaped to hold a staff-like object – a torch handle would fit right in. The figure is richly detailed and the capture of the body’s movement, of the determination on his face and of the minutiae of massed muscle tones throughout, appear quite realistic. This possible Olympian stands atop a tiered, rectangular base or stand, perhaps at one time displaying his nation’s proud colors or carrying forth the eternal flames to the games. The stone base beneath the metal platform is so old, the chipped edges and flaked corners have smoothed to a near natural state, as if weathered by the elements over eons. The figure and base are in remarkably good condition, less the bend in the lamp stem; it appears to be not broken and still structurally sound as it resists gentle force applied in either direction. The blemish around the right shoulder and biceps appears to be a manufacturing defect line and above it, corrosion-related, perhaps due to moisture exposure in storage, and not a break and a repair. Mixed metal breakages are notoriously difficult to repair due to their low melting point and successful repairs are few and far between. The wire is old but absent cracks, breaks and complete rigidity. The socket looks newer and the lamp is in working condition.
