VTG Art Deco Nouveau Arts & Craft. Civilization on the Back of an Elephant. I pack professionally to facilitate your damage-free receipt. If you pay the. And you will have to file your own claim. This lamp is on display for sale at an art gallery. Presented for Your Consideration. Humans, as a collective, have sought stability and predictability in a universe plagued by volatility and uncertainty. One world view that grew out from the need for control was an immense elephant carrying the world on its back, sometimes with or without the participation of a giant turtle. The elephant, with its great size and weight represents stability. A human structure, stacked buildings or a city, serves as the embodiment of the world; its civilization. These concepts are beautifully cast in this elephant lamp with stacks of structures atop its back that appear in the likeness of temples or pagodas. The intelligent beast is unusually animated and stands upon an exquisitely rendered and tiered platform that takes on the appearance of cushions or a stylized foundation. Cast as a single piece of iron, this heavy lamp has aged to a delicious chocolate and cinnamon finish and shows neither damage nor substantive wear. The old socket seems slightly bent but that is an easy fix. It works with what I perceive as a half-second delay. I don’t know why and I have not pursued the apparent quirk which I sometimes see with very old lamps. All parts look vintage and original and I have only added some padding to the 4 feet to protect delicate surfaces. Height (base to socket top) – 8 1/2 inches. Depth – 3 1/4. Weight – 2 lb 6 oz. All electric parts should be checked before use. I acquired this piece with a handsome hoard of lamps and period parts from established antiquities dealers over the years for my lighting business. This listing is for a genuine artifact of a bygone era that will be a pleasure to welcome into a new home. The pictures are an important part of the description. All reasonable offers welcome. Thank you for viewing my listing. You may wish to see further rare and unusual vintage collections. Exceptional lamps and lighting instruments designed to surprise and delight both casual users and serious connoisseurs of light. I use clean, recycled materials and a heavy-duty box whenever possible. Tall and long items can bend during transport and become damaged when passed from hand to hand.
