Dating to the late 1930’s, this outstanding art deco lamp is a stunning example of the incorporation of man-made materials in American industrial design. Catalin, an early phenolic resin, was used in manufacturing to simulate the look of gemstones. Due to the intensive labor involved in fashioning the material, it all but disappeared in use after WWII when manpower was at a premium and other, more malleable, plastics became widely available. Catalin has become highly valued by collectors and there is certainly a good share of it in this lamp. Few such unique catalin lamps survive this day. This lamp has been restored and refurbished and is in excellent working order. The lamp was completely disassembled for restoration. All catalin components have been cleaned and polished. Brass fittings have been machine polished. The original push switch socket interior has been refurbished with new like kind. Wiring has been refurbished new vintage style fabric covered cord and is appointed with a vintage Bakelite plug. This lamp accepts a standard medium Edison base light bulb. The double-clip shades provided requires a torpedo shaped bulb. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Height to top of shade: 14-1/4″ Height to top of bulb socket: 11″ Base: 5-1/2″ Point to Point Shade: 6″ Bottom X 4″ Top X 5-1/2″ Side General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering.

Dating to the the late 1930’s, this unusual bouilotte style lamp was made by the Rembrandt Lamp Company of Baltimore, Maryland. Rembrandt began operations in 1816 and soon became established as a maker of high-quality gas lamps. In the late 1920’s they made the transition to electric lamps. Their lamps were known for their well crafted design as well as the quality of their manufacture. They were consistently sturdier and more substantial than their contemporaries. Very few Art Deco Rembrandt lamps are known today. Those identified are highly stylized and coveted by design enthusiasts. The lamp presented here is certainly unusual and of strong modernist design. This lamp has been restored and refurbished and is in excellent working order. It has been completely disassembled and all parts cleaned and polished. The turn knob switch socket interiors have been refurbished with new like kind. All wiring has been refurbished with new period reproduction rayon covered cord and appointed with a vintage style plug. The black fabric shade appearing in the first two photos is NOT included. This lamps utilizes two standard medium base Edison bulbs (not included). Approximate dimensions are as follows: Adjustable height to top of finial: 21-1/2″ – 27-1/4″ Height to top of sockets: 11-3/4″ Base diameter: 6-1/4″ NOTED FLAWS- While the lamp displays well overall, close scrutiny reveals cosmetic flaws as follows: – Slight distortion and superficial abrasion of the chrome base where the interior “U” component had rotated over time; – Wear to chrome finish, particularly on the central ball and on the underside of the larger “U” component Please refer to the final 2 photos provided here for close views of the above. General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering.

Dating to the mid 1930’s, this extraordinary lamp is exceptionally rare. Its figural form appears to be an abstraction of a human or automaton. The lamp is comprised of interlocking pieces of solid bakelite whose colors include reddish brown, dark brown/black and olive green. The pieces are held in place with 3 threaded rods, having bakelite acorn caps on either side. The power cord running through the open hollow threads through four bakelite orbs. In my four decades of collecting and restoring vintage lighting, I thought I had seen just about every American lamp from the art deco period, but this is a first for me. This lamp is truly remarkable and will likely be the first and last example you, yourself, will see. This lamp has been restored and refurbished and is in good working order. It has been disassemble and all parts cleaned. The mottled colors have been obscured over time. A thorough hand polishing should restore the vibrance of the colors to original refer to the last photo here, showing an interior covered surface. The original push switch socket interior has been retained. The switch mechanism is unusual, in that the push rod is removable. This is also something I have never come across. Wiring has been refurbished with new vintage style fabric covered cord and is appointed with a vintage Bakelite plug and new insulator disc. This lamp utilizes a standard medium Edison base light bulb. The double-clip shades provided requires a torpedo shaped bulb. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Height to top of shade: 13-1/2″ Height to top of bulb socket: 10″ Base: 4-1/2″ X 4-1/2″ Shade: 6″ Bottom X 4″ Top X 5-1/2 Side COSMETIC FLAWS: – One of the bakelite acorns capping the rods is missing. This does not significantly effect the integrity of the assembly. Bakelite is chipped in some places where parts interlock Please review the final 3 photos for views of the above referenced issues General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering.

This exceptional decorative lamp dates to the early 1930’s. Polar bears were first introduced to the world of art deco by sculptor François Pompon at the 1925 Exposition for Decorative Arts. Here they were used on bookends and other decorative objects, and, on rare occasion, in decorative lighting.
