I usually don’t take enough pictures of a lamp to fill all 12 squares. This time I took many more than 12. This treasure has so many features worth disclosing. Poor to moderate facsimiles of the Lily base reading lamp can be seen everywhere, usually made of spelter and treated to look like bright or darkened brass or even made with thin-walled brass. This may be one of the originals that those lamps are modeled from. Reading lamps are generally skinny and this one looks the same on the surface, measuring just 16 inches tall, with a base of 5 1/2 x 7. The horizontal socket-to-curving-pipe measure is 11 inches. This relatively small frame packs a surprising 4 lbs 4 oz of solid brass construction. It is sheathed in a bevy of heavy cast adornments from socket to base. The socket is still functional, its pull-chain smooth, and garnished with a large thick 4-leaf cover. Together, they are tuned by an original swivel with teeth. Tracing the thick curved pipe we discover an extensive leafy enhancement, like the crest of a dragon running the length of its spine, heavy and fused with the pipe. Lower, we sight another similar leafy frill, leading to yet a second 4-leaf adornment, like cuffs before the shoe. Finally, our eyes rest upon the large heavy beautifully aged brass base, covered in deep impressions of water lilies as if in a borrowed dream. The only adornment that can be made to move is the cast 4-leaf cover over the socket. Everything else past the swivel is one. The lamp speaks for itself but I couldn’t help but chirp its praises. Whether you decide to simply insert a decorative bulb, put on a vintage shade or upgrade to an artisan glass experience that raises the bar, you won’t be able to resist the pure gravity and assurance this lamp imparts. I acquired this instrument with a handsome hoard of lamps and period parts from established antiquities dealers across US, European and SA boundaries over the years for my lighting business. This listing is for a genuine artifact of a bygone era that will be a pleasure to welcome into a new home. Please ask all questions. Thank you for viewing my listing.
