Vintage Machine Age Art Deco Bakelite Automaton Lamp c. 1935 RESTORED
Dating to the mid 1930’s, this extraordinary lamp is exceptionally rare. Its figural form appears to be an abstraction of a human or automaton. The lamp is comprised of interlocking pieces of solid bakelite whose colors include reddish brown, dark brown/black and olive green. The pieces are held in place with 3 threaded rods, having bakelite acorn caps on either side. The power cord running through the open hollow threads through four bakelite orbs. In my four decades of collecting and restoring vintage lighting, I thought I had seen just about every American lamp from the art deco period, but this is a first for me. This lamp is truly remarkable and will likely be the first and last example you, yourself, will see. This lamp has been restored and refurbished and is in good working order. It has been disassemble and all parts cleaned. The mottled colors have been obscured over time. A thorough hand polishing should restore the vibrance of the colors to original refer to the last photo here, showing an interior covered surface. The original push switch socket interior has been retained. The switch mechanism is unusual, in that the push rod is removable. This is also something I have never come across. Wiring has been refurbished with new vintage style fabric covered cord and is appointed with a vintage Bakelite plug and new insulator disc. This lamp utilizes a standard medium Edison base light bulb. The double-clip shades provided requires a torpedo shaped bulb. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Height to top of shade: 13-1/2″ Height to top of bulb socket: 10″ Base: 4-1/2″ X 4-1/2″ Shade: 6″ Bottom X 4″ Top X 5-1/2 Side COSMETIC FLAWS: – One of the bakelite acorns capping the rods is missing. This does not significantly effect the integrity of the assembly. Bakelite is chipped in some places where parts interlock Please review the final 3 photos for views of the above referenced issues General and critical photos have been provided and are a part of the description for this offering.
