VTG Art Deco Nouveau Arts & Craft. “Young Lady Reading” Lamp. Nd you will have to file your own claim. Presented for Your Consideration. I removed a crumpled old box from beneath my tile saw cart this afternoon and was surprised to find this sleeping beauty. I honestly don’t recall acquiring her but the lamp is in the styles that draw me; unique figure quality lamp bases with character interest. I wiped away years of accumulated grime and gave her a light cleaning with an oiled cloth. I checked and cleaned both candelabra sockets and rewired the lamp back to operation. I inserted 2 low wattage bulbs and added a pair of gold 1-inch fitter trumpet shades I took off of a damaged antique lamp. After the photo shoot, I added an insert to the base bottom and then finished with a felt pad. A young lady lies on her tummy, seemingly lost in thought over an open book. She appears to be wearing a light summer dress and the leaf sprouting vines that encircle her signify she may be in a garden. A planted rose juts from her hair. The oval base she rests on is beautifully decorated with flora atop 3 tiers in an ever-widening descending order. First, a singular chain of stipple, then an arrangement of shapes that resemble large hand-worked stones that shore up old temples and mounds and finally, a smooth plain base that supports the preceding. Two curved lamp stems writhe up from the garden floor like great sentinel trees, supporting a pair of lights to help illuminate in her travels. I cannot be certain when this lamp was made. It possesses both vintage and modern qualities that in the end, may both have contributed to its current disposition. The base does not appear to be a relatively recent fabrication. Oval shape is not “perfectly” oval; one end is shaped differently than the other. The circle of slab-like arrangements around the base don’t seem to be made from pure modern production methods and ideas, as if a craftsman’s hands were directly involved in their finishing. The details are too fine and the organic unevenness too intentional to be solely machine made. Absent the curved light stems, this lamp is not magnetic but too heavy to be spelter, even of the thicker variety. It feels like bronze but I have not tested it for that. The sockets and wiring are newer. The nuts securing the 2 lamp stems are completely rusted over. This lamp is in excellent working condition and would make an enriching gift for anyone embarking on a journey of discovery, destiny or a dalliance with dreams and desires. The twin steel lamp stems are strong and structurally sound. They wear their age well and the peppering of rust complements the rest of the ensemble. The equally distinguished shade holders are free of cracks and breaks and possess a malleable quality that makes shade fitting easy. The wiring is without fault and the cord switch clicks with confidence. Just add your favorite 1-inch fitter shades to complete its resurrection. All reasonable offers welcome. Height – 8 inches. Weight 2 lbs 7 oz. Use 1-inch fitter shades. Use 7-15 watt incandescent (slender) indicator / picture bulbs (preferably frosted if you can find them). 200-400 lumen small slender LED bulbs.
