This exceptional decorative lamp dates to the early 1930’s. Polar bears were first introduced to the world of art deco by sculptor François Pompon at the 1925 Exposition for Decorative Arts. Here they were used on bookends and other decorative objects, and, on rare occasion, in decorative lighting.
Moreau was born in Paris in 1834, the youngest son of sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Moreau. He studied with his father and also under Augustin Drumont and Jean Thomas. In 1861, Auguste made his debut at the Salon where he would exhibit regularly until 1913.
All the joints are snug. Insert the top finial. Re-connect the column wiring (the ends plug-in together), then slide the column rods back together, and turn to lock the rods in place.
