The two founders combined pieces of their names to create the C. Modernism magazine interviewed Jerry Fels shortly before his death in October 2008. According to the resulting article in the Spring 2007 issue of Modernism magazine, page 116, the company was founded in 1963 by Fels and his brother-in-law Curtis (Kurt) Freiler. Freiler was the production chief, and Fels was head of design. Their goal was to produce gallery-quality art for the masses. Artisan House sculptures are made in California. Writer Mitchell Owens wrote a two page article on the history of C. Jere for the November 2010 issue of Elle Decor. In it he states that “Today those pieces are attracting the admiration of leading dealers in vintage chic”. He goes on to say that after launching in 1964 Jere sculptures were “distributed by Raymor, a cutting edge studio in New York City, and retailed at Gump’s in San Francisco and other high quality emporiums”. He also reported that Under Freiler’s meticulous direction, the workers – a number of whom were minorities or handicapped – sheared, crimped, torched, and welded brass, copper, and other metals before coating them with luminous patinas. Using the copyrighted signature of’C. Jere’, Curtis Jere, created abstract home decorating accessories that have come to be regarded as art objects. Included are wall sculptures, mirrors, andirons, portrait busts, rugs, furniture and hanging fixtures, all with “accentuating shapes, colors and textures” in copper, steel, brass, bronze and other mixed media. Jeré works range from representational to highly abstract. Some of the older techniques, such as enameling, using resin, and the bronzes, haven’t been used in decades. These objects were marketed by Jere and his partner, Jerry Fels through their business entity, Artisan House. Artisan House was very secretive about who Curtis Jere was, or if he even existed. Elle Decor – November 2010, 2 page article by Mitchell Owens traces the history of C. This is a bold and skillfully crafted Amazing Antique Vintage Mid Century Modern BRUTALIST Copper Metal Lamp, comprised of rugged rows of copper rods which have been welded into a cylinder-like form to create this large avant garde Brutalist lamp. The overall shape resembles a futuristic Soviet Bloc skyscraper, and starkly stands out from a distance. This piece approximately dates to the 1960’s – 1970’s and appears to be unmarked and unsigned. Perhaps you recognize the artist or designer of this piece? Approximately 19 1/2 inches tall x 7 inches wide. This artwork appears to be a functional lamp; however, it has not been plugged in. Very good condition for age, with some dustiness and a natural tarnished patina to the copper lamp body from age please see photos. Acquired from an old and modern estate in Studio City, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! Which derives from the French word. Meaning “raw” – was coined to describe an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity. Essentially created the brutalist style; its best-known iterations in the United States are the Marcel Breuer-designed Whitney Museum of American Art and Paul Rudolph’s Yale Art and Architecture Building. Lately, the word “brutalist” has been adopted by the realms of furniture design and the decorative arts to refer to cabinet’s, tables and accessory pieces such as mirror frames and lighting that are made of rougher, deeply textured metals and other. Materials that are the visual and palpable antithesis of the sleek, smooth and suave. Brutalist design encompasses that which is crafted, hewn and worked by hand – an aesthetic rebuke (or, at least, a counterpoint) to furniture that is created using 21st-century materials and technology. Paul Evans is Exhibit A. His Sculpture Front cabinets laced with high-relief patinated steel mounts have become collector’s items nonpareil, while the chairs and tables in his later Cityscape series and Sculpted Bronze series. Are perhaps the most expressive, attention-grabbing pieces in modern American design. Other exemplars of brutalist design are Silas Seandel. The idiosyncratic New York furniture designer and sculptor whose works in metal – in particular his tables. Have a kind of brawny lyricism, and Curtis Jere. A nom-de-trade for the California team of Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels. The bold makers of expressive scorched and sheared copper and brass mirror frames and wall-mounted sculptures. The names of other brutalist designers are, so far, unknown to history. When it comes to attitude and commanding presence, brutalist design has it in spades. Its primary gestation began in the 50’s from the architectural movement known as New Brutalism, which evolved from the use of concrete as a building material to create monumental statements adapted from modernist ideals. Raw concrete in French is. Which was a source of the name. Its use in architecture and sculpture added a confrontational rawness to it, which influenced the evolution and style of brutalist movement in the 60’s and 70’s. Brutalist art drew inspiration from the likes of Le Corbusier’s architecture to the sculptures by Alexander Archipenko, Constantin Brancusi and Alberto Giacometti. With sculpture, conflicting asymmetrical geometries merged with mayhem and menace, usually constructed from raw forms of metal and clay, to essentially define the brutalist aesthetic. It went on a tangent to the Mid Century modernism where you had artists like Paul Evans creating audacious, brash, heavily textured furniture with pure abandon. Brutalist architecture was quite often represented with repetitive angular geometries to a massive scale. It also was reactionary in the sense that the early Brutalism architects found the streamlined modernist designs too symmetrical and neat and wanted to introduce more abstract and unpredictable shapes to their brutalist buildings. The radical brutalist art had an element of risk to it and pushed the boundaries of abstract expressionism in modernist art. Rather than being easy on the eye it is more antagonistic and even hostile, and a challenge for interior designers to integrate into any location. But for giving life into an inert environment, a brutalist piece is synonymous with edgy dynamics and primal honesty. This item is in the category “Art\Art Sculptures”. Antique VTG 50s-60s U. F. O HUGE! Swag Light/Lamp Atomic Space Folk Art, Space Age
Antique VTG 1950s-60s U. Swag Light/Lamp Atomic Space Folk Art, Area 51. We have no words for this, anyone who sees it just stares and is speechless. This is a light built by a electrical space aged genious i suppose. Its circa late 1950s, early 60s, that much we know from the prior owner however we dont know who built it. The light is huge! Measures approximately 2′ feet tall x 2′ feet wide, and made of metal. Everything seems to work. Heres an explanation as to what it does. Of course there are a bazillion very old early generation red LED lights, all work but four of them. Then there are larger colored dome lights adorning the top and bottom portions of the space craft. The bottom colored lights and the red beacon light on the very bottom flash on and off like a blinker switch, how they got it to do that is way beyond me, there is a little pull chain light switch that turns that feature on and off. Last but not least this thing actually humms, yes it has a slight humm to it just like you would expect a real ufo to sound like? Again we have no idea how someone did this, I was extremely tempted to open it up and see, but left well enough alone as im not qualified to be messing with whatever is going on inside of it. This belongs in a shop/Restaurant in Roswell New Mexico or somewhere it can be seen and enjoyed by many. We joke that only Bob Lazar himself could have made this.. All kidding aside this an extremely unique Piece of lighted Folk art, right out of the space age era itself. The light is extremely old. Has imperpections throughout, some of the LED’S are recessed in spots most likely from being bumped throughout the decades, but working. There is paint flaking off, there is a spot on one edge that has corrosion that went through at one point (pictured) some slight denting here and there, and the bottom large red beacon light looks to have had some appoxy used to seat it? And the plug has been replaced. We decided to leave this light just as found. The new owner can decide weather they want to restore it or leave as is. Either way its a jaw dropping piece, and your gauranteed endless conversation’s over this one. Thank you for looking.
